CGPA to GPA Converter (4.0 Scale)

The CGPA to GPA Converter is built for students applying from India and Pakistan to US universities, graduate programs, and employers that ask for a GPA on the 4.0 scale. It first converts your CGPA to a percentage using your local formula, then maps that percentage to the equivalent US GPA. Select your grading system, enter your CGPA, and both results appear instantly. The converted GPA is an approximate equivalent for application purposes; some US admissions offices use their own conversion tables, so always include your original CGPA alongside the converted figure.

Formula: percentage = (CGPA / 4.0) × 100

How the conversion works

The conversion runs in two steps. Step 1 converts your CGPA to a percentage using the official formula for your grading system. Step 2 maps that percentage to a US GPA on the 4.0 scale using standard letter-grade boundaries. Select your system, enter your CGPA, and both the percentage and the equivalent US GPA appear.

Notice how the same 8.5 CGPA produces a US GPA anywhere from 3.0 to 3.3 depending on the Indian formula used. This is why specifying the grading system matters when converting for an application.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select your grading system from the dropdown.
  2. Enter your CGPA. The calculator converts it to a percentage first.
  3. Read the equivalent US GPA from the result panel or the reference table above.
  4. Round to one decimal place when reporting on applications.

When to use this calculator

Use it when a US university application, graduate program, or employer form asks for a GPA on the 4.0 scale and your transcript shows a CGPA. Use it to compare your standing against US GPA benchmarks for graduate school admissions, which typically require a 3.0 or higher for regular admission and 3.5 or higher for competitive programs. When reporting the result, always note your original CGPA and the conversion formula you used.

Common mistakes

Using the wrong grading system. An Indian 8.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale has nothing to do with a Pakistani 3.5 CGPA on a 4.0 scale. Selecting the wrong system produces a completely wrong US GPA. Confirm your scale from the top of your official transcript before converting.

Treating the result as official. This converter produces an approximate equivalent. Some US institutions use their own in-house conversion tables and may arrive at a different figure. Never submit only the converted GPA without also including your original CGPA and transcript.

Rounding up on applications. A converted GPA of 3.34 should be reported as 3.3, not 3.4. Rounding in your favour on a formal application is considered misrepresentation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CGPA to a US GPA?

The conversion has two steps. First, convert your CGPA to a percentage using the formula for your grading system. Second, map that percentage to a US GPA using the standard letter-grade scale: 93 to 100 is 4.0, 90 to 92 is 3.7, 87 to 89 is 3.3, 83 to 86 is 3.0, and so on down to below 60 which is 0.0.

What is an Indian 8.5 CGPA in US GPA?

It depends on the formula your university uses. Under the general Indian formula (CGPA minus 0.75 times 10), an 8.5 CGPA equals 77.5%, which maps to roughly 3.3 on the US 4.0 scale (B+). Under the VTU formula (CGPA times 10), 8.5 equals 85%, which maps to 3.3 to 3.7 (B to B+). Under CBSE (CGPA times 9.5), 8.5 equals 80.75%, which maps to roughly 3.0 to 3.3.

What is a Pakistani 3.5 CGPA in US GPA?

Under the HEC 4.0 scale formula (CGPA divided by 4.0 times 100), a 3.5 CGPA equals 87.5%, which maps to approximately 3.3 to 3.4 on the US scale (B+). Under the HEC 5.0 scale, a 3.5 CGPA equals 70%, which maps to roughly 2.0 (C).

Do US universities accept converted GPAs?

Most US graduate programs and employers accept a converted GPA for initial screening, but they usually want your original transcript and CGPA as well. Some institutions use their own conversion table, which may produce a slightly different figure. Always submit both the original CGPA and the converted GPA, and note which conversion method you used.

Should I round my converted GPA?

Round to one decimal place when reporting on a US application. A converted GPA of 3.34 should be reported as 3.3. Inflating by rounding up (for example, writing 3.4 instead of 3.34) is considered misrepresentation on formal applications.
