How the conversion works
The conversion runs in two steps. Step 1 converts your CGPA to a percentage using the official formula for your grading system. Step 2 maps that percentage to a US GPA on the 4.0 scale using standard letter-grade boundaries. Select your system, enter your CGPA, and both the percentage and the equivalent US GPA appear.
Conversion examples
| CGPA | System | Percentage | US GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.50 | HEC Pakistan (4.0) | 87.5% | 3.3 (B+) |
| 3.50 | HEC Pakistan (5.0) | 70.0% | 2.0 (C) |
| 9.60 | CBSE India | 91.2% | 3.7 (A−) |
| 8.50 | General Indian universities | 77.5% | 3.3 (B+) |
| 8.50 | Anna University | 80.0% | 3.0 (B) |
| 8.50 | VTU | 85.0% | 3.3 (B+) |
Notice how the same 8.5 CGPA produces a US GPA anywhere from 3.0 to 3.3 depending on the Indian formula used. This is why specifying the grading system matters when converting for an application.

How to use this calculator
- Select your grading system from the dropdown.
- Enter your CGPA. The calculator converts it to a percentage first.
- Read the equivalent US GPA from the result panel or the reference table above.
- Round to one decimal place when reporting on applications.
When to use this calculator
Use it when a US university application, graduate program, or employer form asks for a GPA on the 4.0 scale and your transcript shows a CGPA. Use it to compare your standing against US GPA benchmarks for graduate school admissions, which typically require a 3.0 or higher for regular admission and 3.5 or higher for competitive programs. When reporting the result, always note your original CGPA and the conversion formula you used.
Common mistakes
Using the wrong grading system. An Indian 8.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale has nothing to do with a Pakistani 3.5 CGPA on a 4.0 scale. Selecting the wrong system produces a completely wrong US GPA. Confirm your scale from the top of your official transcript before converting.
Treating the result as official. This converter produces an approximate equivalent. Some US institutions use their own in-house conversion tables and may arrive at a different figure. Never submit only the converted GPA without also including your original CGPA and transcript.
Rounding up on applications. A converted GPA of 3.34 should be reported as 3.3, not 3.4. Rounding in your favour on a formal application is considered misrepresentation.
