Anna University CGPA Calculator

Two Anna University documents give the same rule, Percentage of Marks = CGPA × 10:

  • The Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 (clause 15.5.2) for students admitted from 2021-22 to non-autonomous affiliated colleges and the University Colleges of Engineering.
  • The ACOE (University Departments) Letter No. 001/ACOE(UDs)/2021, dated 15.07.2021, for R-2015, R-2018 and R-2019.

The calculator uses this by default, so a CGPA of 8.5 is 85%.

Admitted before 2021, or at an autonomous college? The (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 figure is widely quoted for affiliated colleges under older regulations and is kept as the second option, but we have not found an Anna University document that states it. Check your mark sheet or your college's circular.

What the Anna University documents say

Anna University, Chennai, uses a 10-point grade system. Its Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 add clause 15.5.2: “In the consolidated grade sheet the CGPA earned shall be converted into percentage of marks” as CGPA × 10. Its ACOE (University Departments) letter of 15.07.2021 sets the same conversion for UG and PG programmes under R-2015, R-2018 and R-2019:

Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10

Neither document covers autonomous colleges or affiliated-college regulations before R2021. If you are unsure which rule covers you, your mark sheet or college circular is the authority, not this page.

Worked examples under both formulas

CGPACGPA × 10 (affiliated R2021; Departments R-2015 to R-2019)(CGPA − 0.5) × 10 (before R2021, not verified)

6.565.0%60.0%
6.060.0%55.0%

The two formulas always differ by 5 percentage points. That can matter at a 60% or 65% eligibility cut-off, so use the one your own document states.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the formula. The CGPA × 10 option is selected by default; pick “affiliated, before R2021” only if your mark sheet or college circular uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10.
  2. Enter your overall CGPA from your grade statement.
  3. Read the percentage in the result panel.
  4. Use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator first if you only have per-semester SGPAs.

When to use the Anna University CGPA Calculator

Use it when a placement, job or admission form asks for a percentage. Where a form asks how the percentage was derived, quote the rule on your own document, and submit the university-issued grade statement if an official document is required. For overseas graduate applications, use the CGPA to GPA converter to show the US 4.0 equivalent. If you only have semester SGPAs and need the cumulative CGPA first, use the SGPA to CGPA Calculator.

Common mistakes

Assuming one formula covers every student. The CGPA × 10 rule is documented for affiliated colleges under R2021 and for University Departments under R-2015 to R-2019. Autonomous colleges and older affiliated regulations may state their own rule on the mark sheet.

Using semester SGPA instead of cumulative CGPA. The formula converts your cumulative CGPA, not a single semester SGPA.

Using the general Indian formula. Applying (CGPA minus 0.75) times 10 to an Anna University result gives a lower figure than either Anna option.

Related calculators

The default result follows Anna University's Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 (clause 15.5.2, read 20 September 2026) and its ACOE letter No. 001/ACOE(UDs)/2021 of 15.07.2021 (read 19 September 2026). The second option is not verified. Confirm with your college exam cell before using a result on an official document.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Anna University formula for CGPA to percentage?

Percentage of Marks = CGPA x 10. Anna University’s Affiliated Institutions Regulations 2021 state this in clause 15.5.2 for students admitted from 2021-22, and its ACOE letter No. 001/ACOE(UDs)/2021 states it for University Departments under R-2015, R-2018 and R-2019. A CGPA of 8.7 is 87% and a CGPA of 7.4 is 74%.

I study at an affiliated college. Which formula applies to me?

If you were admitted from 2021-22 to a non-autonomous affiliated college, the Regulations 2021 (clause 15.5.2) say CGPA x 10, the default in the calculator. For earlier regulations such as R2017 or R2013, many websites quote (CGPA minus 0.5) x 10; it is the second option, but we have not verified it against an Anna University document. Autonomous colleges set their own rules, so check your mark sheet.

Why do some websites say Anna University subtracts 0.5?

The (CGPA minus 0.5) x 10 formula circulates widely, often without a source, usually for older affiliated-college regulations. Both Anna University documents we have read, the Regulations 2021 for affiliated colleges and the 2021 ACOE letter for University Departments, use CGPA x 10 with no subtraction. At a CGPA of 8.0 the two give 80% and 75%.

Is the Anna University formula the same as the general Indian formula?

No. The general formula used by many Indian universities is (CGPA minus 0.75) x 10, which gives 72.5% at a CGPA of 8.0. Under Anna University’s CGPA x 10, 8.0 is 80%.

Can I use this percentage for job or admission applications?

Whether an employer or admissions office accepts a converted percentage is its own rule, so check the advertisement or prospectus. Where an official document is asked for, submit the university-issued grade statement or the conversion certificate rather than a calculated figure.
