How matric percentage is calculated
The formula is the same as any percentage calculation: total marks obtained divided by total possible marks, multiplied by 100. The complexity in matric results comes from the fact that each subject has a theory component and a practical component with separate maximums.
Matric % = (Total marks obtained ÷ Total maximum marks) × 100
Standard marks pattern (science group)
| Subject | Theory (max) | Practical (max) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urdu | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| English | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Islamiyat / Ethics | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Pakistan Studies | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Mathematics | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Physics | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Chemistry | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Biology / Computer | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| General Science or elective | 75 | 25 | 100 |
| Total | 675 | 225 | 900 |
Some boards cap the total at 1050 or 1100 depending on the group and the specific elective chosen. Enter the actual maximum from your result card for accuracy.
BISE grade scale
| Percentage | BISE grade | Division |
|---|---|---|
| 90% and above | A1 | Distinction |
| 80% to 89% | A | First Division |
| 70% to 79% | B | First Division |
| 60% to 69% | C | Second Division |
| 50% to 59% | D | Second Division |
| 33% to 49% | E | Third Division |
| Below 33% | F | Fail |
Grade boundaries are consistent across most BISE boards in Pakistan. Some boards issue merit certificates at 75% and above.
How to use this calculator
- Select your BISE board from the dropdown.
- Add a row for each subject on your result card.
- Enter the marks you obtained and the maximum for each subject.
- If your result splits theory and practical, enter them as two separate rows or combine them into one row with the combined marks and combined maximum.
- Read the total marks, percentage, and BISE grade in the result tiles.
Why matric percentage matters for university admission
Pakistani university admission aggregates include a Matric component. Under the MDCAT formula, Matric carries 10% of the aggregate. Under the ECAT formula, it carries 17%. Under general BS program formulas, it is typically 25%. A student with a 90% Matric result gains 1 percentage point more in the MDCAT aggregate than a student with an 80% Matric, all else being equal. The difference grows at the FSc and entry test components, but Matric still contributes enough to matter at competitive merit cutoffs.
When to use this calculator
Use it right after marks are announced to check your percentage before the official result card arrives. Use it to verify that the percentage shown on your result card matches your own calculation. Use it when applying to universities that ask for your Matric percentage for the admission aggregate. For FSc results, use the FSc Grade Calculator. To calculate your full admission aggregate, use the Merit Calculator.
Common mistakes
Entering theory marks only. If your result card shows theory and practical separately, both must be included. A subject with 58 theory marks out of 75 and 22 practical marks out of 25 has a combined score of 80 out of 100. Using only 58 out of 75 understates both the marks and the maximum.
Using 100 as the maximum for all subjects. Most BISE boards in Pakistan have subjects with theory and practical components. Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies sometimes carry different maximums than science subjects. Use the actual maximum from the result card.
Confusing total marks with the percentage. A result of 850 out of 1100 is not 85%. It is 77.3%. Always divide the total marks by the total maximum before multiplying by 100.
