Percentage to GPA Calculator

Enter the percentage from your mark sheet, choose the GPA scale you need, and this tool returns the GPA using the reverse of each scale’s published conversion. It is the calculator to use when a form asks for a GPA but your school or board only issued marks.

Formula: GPA = (percentage ÷ 100) × 4.0

What this calculator does

Schools in Pakistan, India and much of the world report marks as a percentage; universities in the United States and Canada, and many scholarship portals, ask for a GPA. This calculator bridges the two. It applies the exact inverse of the published GPA-to-percentage formula for the scale you pick, so a value converted here and then converted back on the GPA to Percentage calculator returns your original number.

Reverse formulas by scale

Target scaleFormulaExample
4.0 (US, HEC Pakistan)(percentage ÷ 100) × 485% → 3.40
5.0(percentage ÷ 100) × 585% → 4.25
10-point (Indian universities)(percentage ÷ 10) + 0.7585% → 9.25
10-point (CBSE)percentage ÷ 9.585% → 8.95

US letter-grade bands

US admissions offices rarely use the linear ratio. They map percentage ranges to letter grades and then to grade points. The most common table (used by many universities and by credential evaluators as a default) is below. Individual schools may shift a band by a point or two.

Worked example: FSc marks to a 4.0 GPA

A student scored 934 out of 1100 in FSc, which is 84.9%. For a scholarship portal that wants a 4.0-scale GPA, the linear conversion is (84.9 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.40. Under the band table the same 84.9% is a B (3.0). If the portal specifies “convert linearly” use 3.40; if it says “use your school’s letter scale” use the band. When unsure, report the percentage itself and let the office convert.

Worked example: percentage to a 10-point CGPA

An Indian student with 72% applying for a program that lists a “minimum 7.5 CGPA” needs the reverse of the general Indian formula: (72 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 7.95, which clears the bar. Under CBSE the same 72% is 72 ÷ 9.5 = 7.58. Both clear 7.5, but the margin differs, so check which system the program means.

Common mistakes when converting percentage to GPA

  • Using the band table for HEC transcripts. HEC Pakistan defines the linear ratio; a 3.4 CGPA is 85%, not a B.
  • Forgetting the 0.75 offset. 80% is 8.75 under the general Indian formula, not 8.0.
  • Mixing semester and cumulative figures. Convert the overall percentage if the form asks for CGPA, not one semester’s marks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert percentage to GPA on the 4.0 scale?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by 4. An 85% becomes (85 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.4. Many US admissions offices instead map percentage bands to letter grades (85% = B, 3.0); the table on this page shows that mapping so you can report whichever the form asks for.

What GPA is 75%?

On the linear 4.0 scale, 75% = 3.0. Under the common US band table, 75% falls in the C range (2.0). On the Indian 10-point scale, 75% = (75 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 8.25. The right answer depends on which scale the recipient uses, which is why the tool asks first.

What percentage is needed for a 4.0 GPA?

On the linear scale, only 100% gives exactly 4.0. Under the band system, anything from 93% up maps to an A and therefore 4.0. Indian 10-point systems top out at 10.0, which corresponds to 92.5% under the (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 rule or 95% under CBSE × 9.5.

Is percentage to GPA the same as percentage to CGPA?

Mathematically yes. CGPA simply means the figure covers your whole degree. The Percentage to CGPA calculator lists the individual Indian university formulas (Anna, VTU, Mumbai and others); this page covers the general scales.

Which scale should I choose for a US college application?

Pick the 4.0 scale. Most US universities recalculate international transcripts themselves or use a credential evaluator such as WES, so treat the result as a guide rather than an official figure and submit the original marks alongside it.
