The formula GTU publishes

Percentage Marks = (CPI/CGPA − 0.5) × 10

This is resolution 4 of Notification 1/2012, approved by GTU's Academic Council and effective from the winter 2011 examination. The notification is signed by the I/c Registrar and numbered GTU/Notification/2012/3970, dated 13 April 2012.

The bands are read from the highest down: a 7.5 meets the 7.1 line and is a first class with distinction, not merely a first class.

CPI or CGPA?

The notification writes “CPI/CGPA” throughout, so the same equation covers both. Resolution 5 explains which one your degree uses: courses longer than two years are awarded on the CGPA of the last four semesters, and two-year courses on the CPI across all four semesters.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying by 10 alone. That drops the 0.5 and adds five points to every result.
  • Using another university's constant. A 0.75 subtraction belongs to the general Indian formula, not to GTU.
  • Rounding before converting. Convert the CPI as printed, then round the percentage if a form demands it.

The formula and class bands are read from GTU Notification 1/2012, retrieved from the university's archived site on 21 September 2026. GTU replaced its website that month, so older circulars now live at old26.gtu.ac.in. Confirm with your examination section before relying on a figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GTU CGPA to percentage formula?

Resolution 4 of GTU Notification 1/2012, dated 13 April 2012 (No. GTU/Notification/2012/3970), states: "An equation to find equivalency between CPI/CGPA may be obtained as follows: Percentage Marks = (CPI/CGPA-0.5) X10". So a CGPA of 8.00 is (8.00 - 0.5) x 10 = 75%.

Is CPI the same as CGPA at GTU?

For this conversion the notification treats them together, writing "CPI/CGPA" throughout. GTU uses CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) for two-year courses and CGPA for longer ones: resolution 5 of the same notification awards the degree on the CGPA of the last four semesters for courses longer than two years, and on the CPI across all four semesters for two-year courses.

What class does my GTU CGPA fall in?

From the same resolution: below 5.5 is pass class, 5.5 and above is second class, 6.5 and above is first class, and 7.1 and above is first class with distinction.

Why does the formula subtract 0.5?

The notification does not explain the constant; it simply states the equation. Treat it as the rule GTU publishes rather than a derivation. Other universities use different constants, which is why a CGPA from one university cannot be converted with another’s formula.

Is this notification still current?

It is the conversion GTU publishes on its own site, and we found no later notification replacing it. GTU rebuilt its website in September 2026 and moved the older circulars to an archive, which is where this PDF now lives. If your college quotes a different figure, ask the examination section which notification it is applying.
